5-Day Drawing Challenge in Procreate: Drawing Florals

I was visiting my family in China recently, spending that time going out and about with them, visiting zoos especially. My interaction with nature got me thinking, maybe I could do a 5-day drawing practice by drawing flowers, because I see them everywhere. And that’s how I came up with this Challenge: go out and take pictures of the flowers you like, then draw a type of flower each day for 5 days.

Preparing Your Own Reference Images

Today it’s easy to find reference images online, because everything is at our fingertips. But don’t forget we still have the option to source our own inspiration. In fact, I’ve been taking pictures of flowers and plants that I like over the years. So I am slowly building up my inspiration library.

Before this Challenge, I encourage you to go out and take pictures of plants and flowers. Let’s just move away from the Internet a bit and immerse ourselves in nature. As an example, I’ve set up the following Pinterest board filled with pictures of plants and flowers that I took over the years. I hope you can also build your own photo library.

Preparing Color Palettes

I picked 5 pictures from my own photo library as reference images for my 5-day practices. And I created a color palette from each of these pictures. You will be able to see how to do it in my tutorials (read on to find them). But just a quick tip here:

In Procreate, tap on the Colors menu, tap on Palettes down the bottom, then tap on the + symbol on the right, choose New from photos, then pick the reference image from the Photo app on your iPad. Now you have a color palette from your reference image.

You can download all these color palettes below. The files open in Procreate.

You can see I started all these 5 drawings without a sketch. I just went straight into drawing the shapes. That’s something I challenge myself sometimes, especially when I am feeling stuck. It’s a good way to empty my chaotic mind and just solely focus on making the work. No need to overthink it. Just enjoy the creative process, and see what comes up.

I hope you are inspired to do this 5-Day Drawing Challenge using your own photos!

Happy creating!
