Color Theory Journalling: Paint Color Swatches in Gouache

Make color swatches using gouache paints to document the following color terms in your journal:

  • Primary Colors:

    • red,

    • yellow, &

    • blue

  • Secondary Colors:

    • orange (red + yellow),

    • green (yellow + blue), &

    • purple (blue + red)

  • Tertiary Colors:

    • red-orange,

    • yellow-orange,

    • yellow-green,

    • blue-green,

    • blue-purple, &

    • red-purple

  • Tint:

    • Mixing a color (hue) with white will make a tint, which means the color is getting lighter.

  • Shade:

    • Mixing a color (hue) with black will make a shade, which means the color is getting darker.

  • Tone:

    • Mixing a color (hue) with gray will make a tone, which means the color is getting muted or desaturated.

  • Warm Colors:

    • red-purple,

    • red,

    • red-orange,

    • orange,

    • yellow-orange, &

    • yellow

  • Cool Colors:

    • yellow-green,

    • green,

    • blue-green,

    • blue,

    • blue-purple, &

    • purple
